Momentum Knysna Forest Marathon 2018
The Knysna Forest Marathon is a beautiful yet challenging race that attracts thousands of athletes and running enthusiasts each year. What makes it such a popular sporting event is its unique route, it is one of the few races in the world that takes place in a forest. The race forms part of the Knysna Oyster Festival - South Africa's premier sport and culinary event, and takes place on 7 July 2018. If you think you've got what it takes to trudge 21.1km or 42km through a serene forest, then this event is for you!
The event starts at the 'The Glebe' in the Knysna Forest, with the finish at the Festival Pavillion on Waterfront Drive. An essential running tip is to start slowly as you're faced with a 2.5km incline right at the beginning. However, the beautiful surrounds are bound to distract you during this tough leg of the race. Afterwards, you'll be rewarded by a long downhill stretch on your way to the finish line.
While the elusive elephants are a rare sight to see, runners are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled as their spoor can be found on the forest floor.
In order to keep the maintain the unspoilt beauty of the forest, runners can only reach the start of the race by taxi - alternate transport will not be granted access to the grounds.
Due to the early morning and cool forest temperatures, runners are encouraged to dress warmly preceding the start of the race. All clothing that is left at the start or found along the route will be donated to the marathon's charity of choice. Upon arrival, hot tea and coffee will be doled out to those who need further warming up.
So, if you're a runner looking for an invigorating forest trail, be sure not to miss one of South Africa's most beautiful marathons!
